Collector of Songs

I have been writing lyrics and poetry for many years now and they pretty much spew forth in the moment, and then lay fallow in some sort of notebook or on sheets of paper that were available at the time.  It has been a way of speaking my truth in a concise way.  It is always accompanied by a feeling of release.  I have decided it is time to give the poems and lyrics some light and air and digital energy...

This came to me the other day, so I thought it would be a good place to start.  I was thinking about a topic for a Twin Cities Cabaret podcast, and I thought I could speak to something that I have been doing for many many years: song collecting.  Oh sure, I have collected sheet music, and albums, etc, but this is more about the discreet selection of songs for my professional use and enjoyment.  Like any other skill, it has been honed over the years with many interesting contributing factors.  That process will have to be the subject of another blog or podcast.  But here is my poem:

Collector Of Songs
rls 12/12/12

I am a collector
A collector of songs
I listen, listen, listen for the right one to come along
I know it has to "hit me";
A tingle, a tear, a smile,
A song I can't stop thinking about for awhile.

Sometimes I go out in pursuit
Combing through the music bins
Or else, it's just mere circumstance that wins

But I had many mentors who helped hone my selection
And some songs just don't fit you well,
While some are sheer perfection

That's me-I'm a collector
A collector of songs
But I always know when the right one comes along
